Brass Knuckle Marvin
WRITTEN BY: BOOTLEG SLIM

Brass Knuckle Marvin knocked out
his greatest hits that summer
when the air was violent
at the Gritseller's Tavern after hours
our glasses jumpin'
by the rhythm in our shoes
Marvin swingin' them
old familiar tunes
everyone was somebody's
bad old friend from school
but hangin' cold in my chest
my heart was so blue.

Marvin gave me a preparation
never mentioned what it was for
he lured me out my Hangman's Pier
to the organ grinder's stall
where laughin' murderers
and crazed virgins
passed out wolf tickets
and prescription bracelets
and I admit that I was low
and may have bought a few
while hangin' cold in my chest
my heart was so blue

Often times I wonder
how we said we'd be so good together
I guess we'll never know
but isn't it pretty to think so

In the electric night-time
I walk crooked in my old shoes
writing gaslight poems
in time broken by the news
of Brass Knuckle Marvin's
lethal dose
they buried him handsome
the juke joint was closed
and isn't it a virtue to remember
Marvin bein' good and true
while hangin' cold in my chest
my heart was so blue
